Not dazzled by light: the new Shiny Detection module for chrome trims

The measurement technology experts from Pixargus are now also getting a grip on scratches and bubbles on shiny surfaces. The new Shiny Detection inline module, which follows the exact contour of the product, is also able to cope with multiply curved metal trims. In combination with ProfilControl 7 it is now possible for the very first time to inspect products consisting of both chrome and rubber in a parallel process, resulting in significant savings on time and money.

What enhances the interior of vehicles or the appearance of stylish household appliances may become a real challenge in quality inspection. High-gloss chrome trims may give objects a dazzling appearance in the true sense of the word. The extremely intensive light reflection makes it very difficult to discern defects on the shiny surface.
Structured light and smart software

Therefore Pixargus’ new Shiny Detection module casts structured light onto the high-gloss material surfaces. The pattern of light showing on the surface of the profile suppresses reflection while creating transitions of brightness which allow even extremely small scratches, bubbles or dents to be detected most reliably. The system follows the exact contour of the product and inspects it over its entire width. The field of vision can be modulated so as to also enable the inspection of curved metal trims.

Flexible inline inspection tool
Pixargus has developed this new inspection tool as an add-on module to ProfilControl 7. Shiny Detection can be flexibly switched in for the inspection of shiny product or of parts of the product that have shiny surfaces. This makes it possible for the very first time to inspect products with surfaces of different materials, for example chrome and rubber, in parallel and at high line speeds. In this way, the new add-on module for glossy surfaces provides tangible savings on time and money.

A brilliant trio integrated within ProfilControl 7 DV
ProfilControl 7 DualVision from Pixargus is a hybrid system that is unique in that it combines two different processes – inspection of the complete surface and 360-degree dimension measurement – within one sensor head. Both measuring modes can run separately or in parallel. New MultiArea functionality, enabled by the combination of physical and virtual sensor technology, makes it possible to define any number of fields of vision with different parameters (e.g. defect sizes) for each camera and inspect all of them at the same time. PC7 DV operates in real time and processes quality-relevant data into a “defect map”. The available Big Data analysis functions make the entire production process more transparent.

The new inspection module can be easily integrated into this system environment: surface inspection, dimension measurement and Shiny Detection work hand in hand as a brilliant trio. All Pixargus-made components can be operated and controlled either as decentralized systems right at the line or centrally via a server.
